It seemed to me to be some sort of collage of hands and feet. immediantly the word suffering came to my mind and the sculture started to look like some sort of cage in which people were struggling to escape from. The piece was executed in white which is quite controversial as white represents many things including peace and safety but the sculpture seems to be anything but peaceful. The name ‘down’ suggests that this particular artwork maybe demonic as it give the mind the impression that they are being dragged to hell. But white also means purity which means that the sculpture could imitate the human body and its innocence at birth. It looks like there has been alot of passion put into this work which is why I like it so much.

When looking at this sculpture the first thing that came to my mind was ‘Cocoon’ it looked vastly like an animal cocoon from maybe a Caterpillar or Bat (but it clearly isn’t). I got a sense of safety from looking at it and after touching it I realised that it was quite soft and delicate. I really liked the 3Dimension of the piece and I walked around it a couple of times to inspect it from all angles. It’s texture replicated that of a tree and it fascinated me by the un-uniform texture that it possessed. By the time i had fully assessed the sculpture I had made up my mind that It was suppose to represent some sort of chamber or shrine but what it was housing was unknown and would remain a mystery.

This artwork represented the epitome of surrealism to me. It was quite fascinating to view but really produced a contrast of emotions. It is a glass cage full of dead insects which what looked like minature humans on their backs. It was portrayed like some sort of fairytale land but with dead insects and with human who looked evil. I found it quite grotesque but could not help myself inspecting it more. I believe this was the intention of the artist (Tessa Farmer) to procuce something magical but not in the conventional way.
